Museum of Indigenous People, formerly known as the Smoki Museum of American Indian Art and Culture, is a museum that features collections of Native American artifacts. It is located in Prescott, Yavapai County, Arizona. The museum offers a wide variety of exhibits to view and is an excellent place to learn about the cultural heritage of the American Indian people.
The museum was built between 1933 and 1935 by relief workers and was designed in an indigenous style. The museum was originally called the Smoki Museum, after a local business club that used to dress as Hopi and dance to demonstrate their native traditions. However, the Hopi protested the Smoki People’s activities, and the museum eventually changed its name.
Collections
The Museum of Indigenous People, formerly known as the Smoki Museum of American Indian Art and Culture, opened its doors in 1935. The museum is home to more than 2000 Native American artifacts. The collections range from kachinas and basketry to prehistoric items and paintings by local artist Kate Cory. Visitors can also learn about the history of the American Indians in the Southwest.
The museum’s collections are made possible by entrance fees and donations. The collection is made up of authentic Native American artifacts, including some that are on loan from other museums. The Prescott area offers plenty of activities, including shopping for Native American jewelry and Native American art.
First Native American board president
Barbara Karkula is the first Native American board president of the Museum of Indigenous People in Prescott, Arizona. The museum, formerly known as the Smoki Museum, changed its name in the spring. The change came after the museum held events that were offensive to some tribes in Arizona. Now, the museum aims to educate the public more about the Native Americans of the Southwest.
